Seeking Better Health: Top 6 Health and Wellness Websites

We all need to be proactive about our physical health. Keeping up with issues that affect chronic conditions, a history of family health and mental conditions. Seeking better physical health can enhance our overall quality of life. Being aware of the nutritional implications of what we eat and how we eat, the overall positive effects of regular (and appropriate) exercise, plus the benefits or side effects of supplements can greatly enhance our overall well-being.

Below is a list of what is considered to be the top 6 health-related websites in the world. I will list them in alphabetical order:

1. CDC.gov: Under the auspices of the Department of Health and Human Services, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the nation’s health protection agency, working 24/7 to protect the U.S. from health and safety threats, both foreign and domestic. CDC increases the health security of our nation. They work to nurture public health on national, state, and local levels. Under their section, “Gateway to Health Communication: Your One-Stop-Shop for Health Communication,” there are multiple public information resources and tools for seeking better physical health. There’s a handy A-Z index and search bar at the top of the page, as well as the ability to sign up for weekly CDC updates.

2. Healthline.com: One of my favorite one-stop-shopping resource for portals for everything health-related! To quote from their Healthline team, “Healthline covers all facets of physical and mental health openly and objectively because we’re here for the whole person — for your whole life…all articles are thoroughly researched and reference high-quality studies and information to support the subject matter…over 20,000 articles have been medically reviewed by doctors, nurses, and subject matter specialists.” Their up-to-date coverage of current health issues (ex., COVID-19) and any questions/concerns about all aspects of health and wellness are addressed. You can also sign up for their wellness newsletter. Excellent site to use in seeking better physical health!

3. MayoClinic.org: Currently considered to be the number one ranking hospital in the U.S., this portal to the Mayo Clinic has reputable, vetted medical information for the public. Scroll down the homepage, and you’ll find the section called “Find Diseases and Conditions, where you can search alphabetically to locate information on the homepage. There’s also a search bar at the top of the home page for any other queries.

4. MedicalNewsToday.com: Another great resource for medically-related topics. With an A-Z index of topics for your convenience and an opt-in newsletter feature, Medical News Today is on par with top consumer health resources. Here’s a quote from their site that best describes their services: “Medical News Today, part of Healthline Media UK, is one of the fastest-growing health information sites in the United States. Every month, more than 70 million people come to Medical News Today for our in-depth health content and the latest news in medical research. Consider us your intellectual peer. We unravel the complexities of health information and make it easy to understand. We take a deep dive into medical research of the past and present, and we break it down to give you the clear-cut facts. Ultimately, we want you to be confident in making informed health decisions for yourself and your loved ones. Using peer-reviewed studies and reputable sources, our knowledgeable and curious editors and writers create more than 250 pieces of content every month.”

5. NIH.gov: The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. In existence since 1887, “NIH scientists have paved the way for important discoveries that improve health and save lives. In fact, 156 Nobel Prize winners have received support from NIH. Their studies have led to the development of MRI, understanding of how viruses can cause cancer, insights into cholesterol control, and knowledge of how our brain processes visual information, among dozens of other advances”. We have access to the NIH’s wealth of knowledge on consumer health issues through their “Health Information” portal’s tab at the top of their website’s main page.

6. Webmd.com: Definitely a perennial favorite of mine and many consumers, WebMD is geared towards a wide variety of public health consumer information. Like most other sites mentioned, it also has health professional finder portals, an alphabetical index for quickly looking up health-related subject matters, a search bar, and health tools. Their medical team works closely with over 100 nationwide doctors and health experts with a broad range of specialty areas to ensure the site’s content is up to date, accurate, and helps you live a healthier life.

Again, these six websites are definitely worth bookmarking and using whenever you have medical and wellness questions. Remember: always check with your personal health provider to better understand and diagnose a healthier you!
