August Is National Wellness Month: Wellness Is More Tha Diet and Exercise – Small Daily Habits That Support a More Balanced Life!

When many people hear the word wellness, they immediately think about eating healthier, exercising more, or losing weight.

While those are certainly important parts of living well, true wellness is much broader. It involves caring for your whole self—physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, financially, environmentally, and cognitively.

As we observe National Wellness Month, August offers a wonderful opportunity to pause, reflect, and make small, intentional choices that support a healthier, more balanced life.

Whether you are a family caregiver, an older adult planning for the future, or simply someone striving to improve your overall well-being, remember this:

Wellness is not about perfection—it is about progress!

For family caregivers especially, wellness often becomes an afterthought. Between work responsibilities, family obligations, appointments, medications, and caregiving duties, it’s easy to place your own needs at the bottom of the list.

Yet caring for yourself isn’t selfish—it helps you remain healthier, more resilient, and better equipped to care for others.

The encouraging news is that meaningful change rarely requires dramatic lifestyle changes. Instead, lasting wellness is often built through small, consistent habits practiced over time.

The Seven Dimensions of Wellness:

Take a few moments to think about

these important areas of your life

Are you caring for your body by getting adequate sleep, staying active, eating nutritious foods, drinking enough water, and scheduling routine healthcare appointments?

How are you caring for your emotional health?

Consider how you manage stress, express your feelings, take breaks, practice self-compassion, and ask for help when needed.

Healthy relationships contribute to overall well-being.

Are you staying connected with supportive family members, friends, neighbors, faith communities, or caregiver support groups?

Spiritual wellness looks different for everyone.

It may include prayer, meditation, worship, gratitude, spending time in nature, serving others, or living according to your personal values.

Financial preparedness can reduce stress and provide peace of mind.

Have you reviewed your budget, organized important documents, planned for future care needs, and discussed financial plans with trusted family members?

Our surroundings affect our health more than we sometimes realize.

Is your home safe, organized, and supportive of independence? Can you easily locate important documents and emergency information?

Keeping your mind active helps support lifelong learning and healthy aging.

Reading, learning a new skill, attending educational programs, solving puzzles, and engaging in meaningful conversations are all excellent ways to strengthen cognitive wellness.

One Small Step Can Make a Big Difference!

Rather than trying to improve every area of wellness this month, choose one dimension that deserves a little extra attention.

Ask yourself:

“What is one small step I can take this week?”

It might be scheduling an overdue medical appointment, taking a daily walk, organizing important documents, calling a friend, setting aside quiet time for reflection, or reading something new.

Small steps taken consistently often lead to meaningful and lasting change.
