No Gym? No Problem! Try Power Walking for Exercise

Want an inexpensive way to get great exercise?  Try power walking!  If you have issues with your back, knees, or hips, power walking is a safe alternative to jogging or running.

Power Walking Can Have Less Physical Impact on Joints and Bones!

It can be done indoors or outdoors.  It can be done on a treadmill, in your neighborhood, in a mall, or on an indoor or outdoor track.

I researched several articles on its’ benefits.  I love being outdoors, so it breaks up my routine of using my treadmill and elliptical.  Maintaining the correct posture and use of my arms is essential and adds to a great aerobic workout!

Power Walking with Others Can Be Motivating!

A November 2020 article by Openfit.com is called, “Why Power Walking is Actually a Great Workout and How to Get Started”.  It discusses:

  • How to Start Power Walking
  • Power Walking Tips
  • Is Power Walking a Good Way to Lose Weight?
  • What Are the Benefits of Power Walking?

This is a worthwhile article to read, especially if you are new to exercising, or have health issues.

A 2019 article by Healthline.com called, “Power Walking: The Whys and Hows of a Life-Changing Exercise Technique”  provides great techniques and tips such as:

  • Watch your posture (so important!)
  • Swing your arms gently
  • Correctly landing your heel and rolling your foot
  • The benefit of taking short strides instead of long strides
  • The benefit of achieving longer distances (important! Work up to longer distances gradually)
  • Tips for healthy power walking

I advise reading this article, and printing it out for future reference!

It is highly recommend that you invest in a good pair of walking shoes.  I did my research for women’s walking athletic shoes.  I wanted something fairly lightweight.

Since I’ve purchased various types of Vionic shoes (bedroom slippers and sandals), I wasn’t surprised to see that the Vionic Brisk Alma Active Lace-Up Sneaker was the most highly rated lightweight women’s walking shoe for 2021 in an article by Women’s Health called “Ten Best Walking Shoes of 2021, According to Podiatrists and User Reviews”

I tried them out on my treadmill, and they are very comfortable and flexible.
