Aging Unbound! Celebrate Older Americans Month This May

When my husband Les and I used to live in Northern California, the weather was almost always ideal for exercising and doing other activities outdoors. We used to say that we would “crap out on a hiking trail” in the Santa Cruz mountains!

Now living in Maryland, the weather and landscape are quite different, but we still seek out other forms of outdoor (and indoor) exercise (and may even “crap out” on a hiking trail in the Appalachian Mountains!).

As members of the “Baby Boomer” generation, we decided long ago that we were going to enjoy life, take care of our health, be generous to others, and continue “aging unbound”!

May is Older Americans Month. “Aging Unbound” is an ideal theme for celebrating more “seasoned” adults! More and more, seniors are seeking to take better control of our overall quality of life. We are more proactive in assuring that we live our best years as just that – our best years!

Many of us want to “age-in-place” by thriving in our current homes. Many more are seeking active adult living, and other dwelling choices that promote healthy and vibrant aging.

Aging unbound” gives us a sense of freedom from “senior stereotypes” which, unfortunately” some seniors adopt about themselves. We play vital, positive roles in our communities – as family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce, and more. Just as every person is unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it – and there is no “right” way.

That’s why the theme for Older Americans Month (OAM) 2023 is “Aging Unbound”

Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the celebration of Older Americans Month. This year’s theme focuses on our opportunity to explore an array of aging experiences without being boxed in by expectations and stereotypes.

While Aging Unbound will look different for each person, here are some of their activity ideas to consider for this month:

  • Arrange for older adults to share or read stories.
  • Arrange for local school students to interview older adults in the community and write short biographies.
  • Use video chat technology to host a storytelling party.
  • Ask your social media followers to share their wisdom, tips, and stories online using a unique hashtag or by posting to a forum you manage.
  • Organize a selfie challenge on social media. Create a theme phrase (e.g., “Aging unbound means…”) and use a related hashtag (e.g., #OlderAmericansMonth).

Visit the 2023 OAM activity ideas page to get more clarification for each idea.

Look folks; we’re never too old to learn! Diverse communities are strong communities. Ensuring that we as older adults remain involved and included in our communities for as long as possible benefits everyone!

As seniors, we need to stay active within our communities. Voice your opinions in local and regional politics. We need to share our abundant knowledge with our youth and each other.

So, make sure that you continue to “take care of your business” – socially, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially – to have a balanced, abundant life and future by “aging unbound”!

Spread the love
