“The Power of Healthy Boundaries for the Family Caregiver”: November is National Family Caregivers Month

I’m thrilled to reflect on my September 25, 2024, online interview with Amy Goyer, the facilitator of AARP’s Family Caregiver Discussion Group on Facebook!

Our discussion, “The Power of Healthy Boundaries for the Family Caregiver,” explored one of the most crucial aspects of caregiving: setting healthy, sustainable boundaries.

This conversation couldn’t come at a more important time as we prepare for National Family Caregivers Month in November—a time dedicated to honoring, supporting, and empowering the millions of family caregivers.

 Key Takeaways from the Interview

1. Why Healthy Boundaries Are Essential

  • During the interview, Amy and I discussed the importance of setting healthy boundaries for the caregiver and everyone involved in the caregiving relationship. Family caregivers often feel immense pressure to be “on call” 24/7, but this is neither realistic nor healthy in the long run.
  • We discussed how establishing boundaries can help caregivers avoid burnout, protect their mental health, and ensure that they can continue providing the care their loved ones need without sacrificing their well-being.

2. Different Types of Boundaries Caregivers Should Set

  • In our conversation, we emphasized that boundaries come in many forms—emotional, physical, time, and financial—and that caregivers need to assess which areas of their lives are impacted by caregiving.
  • Healthy boundaries help create a balanced caregiving experience, whether by finding time for self-care, setting limits on overwhelming tasks, or creating space for personal relationships outside of caregiving.

3. How to Communicate Boundaries with Loved Ones

  • Many caregivers in the discussion group shared their concerns about the challenge of discussing boundaries with their care recipients. We offered practical advice on how to communicate boundaries compassionately and transparently.
  • We suggested focusing on mutual respect and how boundaries benefit the caregiver and the care recipient. It’s all about maintaining a relationship built on trust and understanding, where both parties’ needs are acknowledged.

4. Boundaries Are Beneficial for Everyone!

We also highlighted that setting boundaries doesn’t just serve the caregiver—it enhances the caregiving dynamic.

By establishing clear guidelines, care recipients can gain a sense of security and independence, allowing them to control their lives more.

This is particularly important as we discuss the empowerment of caregivers and those they care for, especially with National Family Caregivers Month on the horizon.

The Importance of National Family Caregivers Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize family caregivers’ tremendous efforts and sacrifices and spotlight their need for resources and support to thrive in their roles.

As we approach this critical month, I encourage caregivers everywhere to think about the boundaries they may need to set to preserve their health and well-being.

My conversation during the Facebook interview with Amy Goyer fits perfectly with the theme of self-care and sustainability for family caregivers.

National Family Caregivers Month is the ideal time to assess your own needs and reflect on how you can better care for yourself while continuing to care for your loved one.
