Family Caregivers: Your Needs Belong in the Care Plan Too!

This National Family Caregivers Month, take one practical step toward greater support and balance.

You Care for Someone Else. Your Needs Matter, Too!

November is National Family Caregivers Month—a time to recognize the people who provide care, coordinate appointments, manage household responsibilities, and support someone they love.

If you are a family caregiver, you may be so focused on what someone else needs that your own needs keep moving to the bottom of the list:

  • The appointment you meant to schedule.
  • The friend you have been meaning to call.
  • The break you keep postponing.

As a former family caregiver, I understand how easily this can happen.

Your health, time, and peace of mind belong in the care plan, too!

This month, choose one manageable step toward greater balance:

  • Ask for specific help. Identify one task someone else could take on, such as picking up groceries or coordinating an appointment.
  • Protect time for your own needs. Put an appointment, a walk, or a conversation with a friend on your calendar.
  • Set one respectful boundary. Be clear about what you can reasonably do and where you need support.
  • Begin a respite conversation. Explore who could provide appropriate care so you can take a break.

You might start with these words:

“I want to continue providing care, but I need a more manageable plan. Can we talk about sharing some responsibilities?”

You do not have to change everything at once! One clear request or one shared responsibility can be a useful beginning.

If you know a family caregiver, offer something concrete. Instead of “Let me know if you need anything,” try: “I’m available Saturday morning. Could I help with an errand?”

Caregivers deserve appreciation throughout November—
and dependable support throughout the year!
